Society of Actuaries Announces 2022 Actuarial Science Early Career Award Winner

Schaumburg, IL, August 8, 2022 – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and its Education & Research Section are proud to announce the recipient of the 2022 SOA Actuarial Science Early Career Award, Dr. Tim Boonen, an associate professor of actuarial science and mathematical finance in the Amsterdam School of Economics at the University of Amsterdam. Dr. Boonen’s research interests include risk sharing, capital allocation, applications of game theory in insurance, and longevity risk modeling. Open to scholars around the world, this award recognizes individuals for their exceptional scientific contributions in actuarial science at the early stages of their academic career.

Before he joined the University of Amsterdam as an assistant professor in 2013, Dr. Boonen received his bachelor’s degree in Econometrics and Operations Research, a master’s degree in Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science, and doctorate in Actuarial Science, all from Tilburg University. He is an expert in quantitative risk management and has a multidisciplinary research focus, including the introduction and development of new economic methodologies. Dr. Boonen has been published in leading actuarial journals such as ASTIN Bulletin; Insurance: Mathematics and Economics; and Scandinavian Actuarial Journal, as well as in academic journals in mathematical economics and operations research. He also serves as a co-editor of the European Actuarial Journal and is a research fellow of the Tinbergen Institute in the Netherlands.

The SOA Actuarial Science Early Career Award is open to individuals within ten years from the start of their first full-time academic appointment. In addition to recognition, recipients receive a cash award of $5,000. Nominees must demonstrate evidence of publication on actuarial science topics in peer-reviewed journals with potential impact on industrial applications and hold a credential from an International Actuarial Association (IAA) member organization or demonstrate continuing progress towards an actuarial professional credential.
