Lifetime Volunteer Award Recipients
The SOA Lifetime Volunteer Award is presented to a volunteer who has shown their ongoing commitment to the SOA for more than 15 years and whose dedication and contributions have helped to advance the Society of Actuaries’ mission as well as the actuarial profession.
2022 Award Recipient
Sam Gutterman
FSA, MAAA, FCAS, FCA, HonFIA, CERA
Sam Gutterman is retired and previously worked at PriceWaterhouseCoopers for 27 years. Prior to PwC, he worked for Continental Assurance Company and CNA Insurance Companies. Sam is a Fellow of the SOA, member of the American Academy of Actuaries, Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, Fellow of the Council of Consulting Actuaries, Honorary Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst.
Spanning from the 1980sthrough present, Sam’s volunteer efforts have focused on professionalism, education and research. He was instrumental in working with other SOA volunteers to develop the organization’s approach to research and experience studies. Their work initiated the first committee on long-term care. Sam serves on a variety of research project groups and committees on retirement, longevity and mortality topics. Recently, Sam has worked with the SOA Research Institute and the International Actuarial Association to focus attention on climate-related risks.
Sam served as 1995–1996 SOA President, and on the SOA Board of Directors. During his presidency he helped develop the North American Actuarial Journal (NAAJ). He is a frequent contributor to The Actuary and the NAAJ in addition to being a noted speaker at SOA events. Sam supported the creation of The Actuarial Foundation. He wrote the SOA-published book “Life Insurance Company Expenses, a Comprehensive Guide to Measuring and Management.”
In addition, Sam participates in ultramarathoning and serves as the second president of the Chicago Areas Runners Association.
